Dr. Maya Angelou’s Advice…

Ellie Drake shares the wisdom she received when interviewing Dr. Maya Angelou at her home in North Carolina.

“Dr. Maya told me to sit up” says Ellie Drake. Ellie expresses how “sitting up” is essential when it comes to following our purpose, trusting our intuition and actualizing results.

Throughout her life, Dr. Maya Angelou lead the way as a highly intellectual woman, loving mother and an inspiration to many. “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” said Dr. Maya Angelou

Dr. Maya Angelou was born on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a writer and civil rights activist and is known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which made literary history as the first nonfiction best-seller by an African-American woman. In 1971, Dr. Angelou published the Pulitzer Prize-nominated poetry collection Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Die. She later wrote the poem “On the Pulse of Morning”—one of her most famous works—which she recited at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993. Maya Angelou received several honors throughout her career, including two NAACP Image Awards in the outstanding literary work (nonfiction) category, in 2005 and 2009. Listen as Ellie interviews Arthur Joseph, the founder and chairman of the Vocal Awareness Institute. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on the human voice, Arthur discusses words such as audacity, obstreperous, adamant, excellence and visceral language. Learn how words and how you say them can influence all aspects of your life.

Arthur has taught globally for over five decades. His varied client list includes national and international leaders in politics, business, entertainment and broadcasting, the hospitality industries as well as among world-class athletes, motivational speakers, life coaches, noted actors, singers and other luminaries of the stage and screen. Formerly on the faculty at the University of Southern California School of Theatre, he has been a visiting artist at both Yale and George Washington Universities, and a visiting professor in the New York University Graduate Extension program, among many others nationally and internationally.

His lifelong dedication to his mission, “To change the world through Voice” imbues his work with a vital sense of urgency as our relationships, our culture, our nation, and our global community becomes increasingly dependent upon communication technology and social media to do the work of communication. As Mr. Joseph states, “We are on the cusp of losing the art of public discourse.” He has become a lone voice in raising the alarm that we aren’t simply losing the ability to communicate, we are losing our innate ability to connect with each other on even the most basic levels—physically, psychologically, and spiritually.

Formerly on the faculty of the University of Southern California School of Theatre, Mr. Joseph has been a visiting artist at Yale and George Washington Universities, a guest lecturer at New York University, as well as traveled the world teaching Vocal Awareness.
